Police: Passenger fled in car of Good Samaritan

A Boston man was killed in a two-car crash in Sharon early yesterday, and authorities were deciding whether to charge his passenger, who emerged from the wreckage and drove off in the car of a person who had stopped to help, officials said.
Kejaun T. Carney, 26, of Mattapan, was receiving treatment at Brigham and Women's Hospital for a serious head injury sustained in the collision. A State Police spokesman said an investigation would determine whether he would face any charges.
Lionel Avila, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, on Interstate 95 north, near exit 9.
About two hours after the crash, police recovered the car belonging to a person they referred to as a "Good Samaritan" on Woodbole Street in Mattapan, where Avila is listed as a resident. Police later found Carney at the hospital. Authorities declined to comment on whether Carney was attempting to drive to Avila's residence or if he had visited Avila's home or contacted any of the victim's relatives.
The Good Samaritan's vehicle was not damaged, and it was unclear yesterday whether it had been returned to its owner, whose name was not released.
Sergeant Robert Bousquet Jr., State Police spokesman, said, "The circumstances are unique in that the driver died and the passenger fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to someone who stopped to render aid. It is premature to speculate as to what actually occurred, but there wasn't an arrest made after investigators interviewed the passenger."
The crash occurred at 3:05 a.m., when Bruce Bilotta, 21, of Randolph, attempted to pass another vehicle, police said. Bilotta's 2005 Ford pickup truck turned into the right lane and collided into the rear of a 2008 Chrysler sedan driven by Avila. The two vehicles spun off the right shoulder of the road. Bilotta and a passenger in his car were not injured, but a third passenger was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.
None of the men was wearing seat belts, police said.
